From our trip in Georgetown, Penang. We had concluded our icon and we finished our task by doing 6 pieces of fridge magnets based on the icon that we had chosen.

Our journey
We learned so much and had so many uplifting experiences on the trip. We
learned on how to care for a culture and
eventually enjoy it. With more enjoyment, we will want to learn and understand
more. We must protect them so that we can handed down to the next generation. So many fun things to learn, so little
time! However, conservation is much more than just preserving a façade. Culture and cultural heritage can give us a sense of
belonging and provide us with insight on where we come from. Cultural Heritage
is an expression of the ways of living developed by a community and passed on
from generation to generation, including customs, practices, places, objects,
artistic expressions and values.
Penang Shophouses.
For the icon that we had choosed, Penang Heritage Shophouse.
From my research, Georgetown has the largest numbers of shophouses in southeast
asia. Shophouses in Penang are long and narrow and punctured with air-wells
between each pitched roof for ventilation.
However, owners of traditional shophouses, eager to adapt to
modern styles, began to refashion their facades in the latest styles, whilst
the strict hierarchical use of space within the shophouse remained.
Extracted from George Town Historic Cities of the Straits of
Malacca – SPECIAL AREA PLAN 2014
There are six (6) main shophouse styles in George Town,
Penang. Each style has distinctive architectural and decorative features which
is a representative of the different periods in George Town’s history.
Icon of Heritage Penang.
There are so many interesting things that we could find here, in Georgetown Penang that represent the icon of Penang. But as for me, these heritage buildings are the icon.
